First Assistant Superintendent - Newport National Golf Club

Newport National Golf Club deemed the “Number One Public Access Course in New England” by New England Golf Monthly. Legendary golf architect, Arthur Hills, designed the challenging 7,244-yard Orchard Course. The 18-hole links-style course sports sloping fairways, marshes, and strategically placed bunkers. The dramatic setting boasts views of the Atlantic Ocean and Sakonnet Passage while challenging golfers with steady winds coming off Narragansett Bay. Golfweek Magazine placed the course in the “Top Twenty New Courses in America”. Our newly constructed 20,000 square foot Club House, and additional 9-hole golf course, and practice facility are on track to open in 2026.

We are seeking a self-motivated individual who is eager to advance his/her career in the golf course industry.  The selected candidate will report directly to the Superintendent to facilitate operations in the maintenance of golf club grounds.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for assisting in all activities related to the construction, care and maintenance for golf course grounds.
  • Operates an assortment of golf course equipment, including but not limited to: mowers, utility vehicles, sweepers, brooms, rollers, rakes, utility vehicles, loaders, compressors, trenchers, automobiles, etc.
  • Assists in planning and supervising the maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers, etc.
  • Assists with small-scale projects as needed, as well as other agronomic practices necessary to maintain top notch conditions. 
  • Assists in the programming, repair, and maintenance of irrigations systems.
  • Ensures irrigation management of all playing surfaces.
  • Monitor and apply chemical applications as directed.
  • Mows golf course turf and performs daily course setup duties.
  • Assists in personnel management and evaluation, employee safety and personnel discipline.
  • Schedules work (may modify the daily work schedule based on professional interpretation) and supervises the employees and their designated tasks/use of equipment.

Qualifications

  • Experience in all phases of golf course management and turf culture.
  • Working knowledge of the maintenance of golf course tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers, and greens; seeding and maintenance practices for golf course turf,  Irrigation system operation, repair, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of irrigation including watering practices, irrigation systems, pumps, wells and automatic controls and drainage.
  • Strong computer literacy skills in management programs and excel.
  • Familiar with the characteristics and proper use of fertilizers and soil conditioners.
  • College degree in agronomy or turf management preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Salary range: 60-70k
